Performance Measurements of Multimedia Flows over a WiFi-based Mesh Network

چکیده
Wireless mesh networks are currently becoming one of the most promising approaches to provide ubiquitous broadband Internet access. In order to successfully make their way as access architecture for the next-generation Internet, mesh networks need to provide mechanisms able to efficiently support emerging broadband multimedia services. In this work, we report some performance measurements obtained on an experimental WiFibased mesh testbed running at CREATE-NET premises. The tests aim at characterizing the suitability of current mesh networking solutions to support multimedia flows. The obtained performance is compared to those obtained by means of a conventional star-shaped topology based on the use of access points. The results show that mesh architectures are able to offer some advantages, in terms of fairness and lower packet loss rate, with respect to a standard access points based architecture.

In recent years, multimedia streaming has increased dramatically in wireless networks. Applications such as Video-on-Demand (VoD) and distributed file backup appear in wireless mesh networks (WMNs). These applications have strict requirements for quality of service (QoS) with bandwidth guarantees. Streaming video flows over WMN faces some challenges as bandwidth guarantee; High data rate flows ...

The extended radio coverage provided by wireless mesh networking (WMN) technologies represents a key advantage compared to the last mile solutions based on standard IEEE 802.11 hot spots. Nevertheless, modern requirements to wireless connectivity include mandatory QoS guarantees for a wide set of real-time applications. In this paper, we first propose a methodology for evaluating multimedia app...
متن کاملAn Admission Control and Traffic Regulation Mechanism for Infrastructure WiFi networks
In a Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) network it is well known that large periods of contention, the intermittent disruptions of the service and limited bandwidth represent a handicap for interactive realtime multimedia applications since they demand high troughput and real time constraints, e.g. Video on Demand (VoD) or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Nevertheless, it is very common to use WiFi n...

Wireless Mesh Networks are currently emerging as a promising paradigm for broadband ubiquitous Internet access. However, their distributed nature raises many challenges when facing the increasing demand for multimedia applications, which require a tight control over the system’s available resources. In this paper, we address such issue by introducing a mechanism combining service differentiatio...
